Dr. Amanda Glew: Senior Month at Timberlea

It’s Senior Month at Timberlea Vet Clinic!   Here’s the latest from Dr. Glew:

Dylan is a 10 year obese male golden retriever. He came into the Timberlea Veterinary Clinic for a routine exam, and the owner mentioned he was drinking and urinating too much.

Shadow is a 9 year old female Schnauzer. She came into the TVC for an exam and the owner brought in urine since she drinking and urinating more. She suspected a urinary tract infection.

Dylan was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. Shadow with a liver problem.

Two very different diseases, yet presenting with clinical signs of which the owners were not very concerned.

This reminds us of the importance in routine geriatric care for your ageing animals. We all know animals age quicker than we do, so 6 months in an older animal is like 2-3 years in our life. This is why doing senior checkups (exam, blood tests, urine test, blood pressure) can make the difference in catching a disease early, and having a chance to control it. Otherwise we are doing “fire engine medicine.” Most clinics offer a senior month, and at our clinic, we decided April will be ours.

As it turns out, Dylan is now on insulin, and Shadow is being treated for hepatitis.
