Hot Pug in the Summertime

In the heat of the summer, it sure would be helpful if The Pug didn’t mind getting wet.

Pugs have terrible internal cooling systems. As dogs sweat only from their relatively small foot pads, they rely on panting – passing moist air over their long tongues – to cool themselves down.

The snoutless pug is, therefore,  at a major disadvantage when the heat cranks up. Add to this the fact that Lola walks around in a black fur coat all day, and this turns her into a sort of canine solar powered EZ Bake Oven.

When we head out on a summer walk – pretty much anywhere – we take along the following items in our “Pug Cool Down Kit”:

Pug Accoutrements

…you can see which item The Pug is most interested in, yes?

A careful dunk in cool-ish water is a fast way to cool down a dog who doesn’t have a great ability to cool herself down naturally.

Alas, this is about as close to getting wet as Lola will allow without a struggle, a few scars (mental for her, physical for us) and an unbelievable amount of payback sulking afterwards.

So close, and yet so far.

She’s still having fun…because she doesn’t know we are just about to give her a little cooling-action.

I know you don’t believe it, but we do it because we love you, Pug.
